Yo, I just finished watching this and I have an absolute new found respect for this cat, J.Cole. By the minute mark, I was beyond impressed. First, I guess you have got to understand I value an education and think that out of all the shit I’ve done/been through in my life getting one (an education) has probably been the only real positive thing that’s come out of it. Hip-hop’s been my life since I was 11-12. Before that, I cannot remember a passion I took as seriously. None the less, there is a lot of shit in this genre that I am constantly unimpressed with and can’t relate to: a big issue was hip-hop’s constant push of, “fuck college, I went to the school of hard knocks nucka”.
To finally see an artist who loves this shit I like do, but approachs it under the premise of ” I understand the street, but it it’s not me” is something I, and most likely the rest of the public, have been waiting for. So often this music is full of ignorance, only fuelling the fire of those who are looking to label the genre garbage. Finally a few artist are out there saying, “I got an education and look what I’m doing with it”. What the fuck is a critic gonna say to that?
Most of the bloggers who live, breathe, eat, sleep, shit this music are also educated and can’t be labeled as a bunch of ignorant fuckheads smoking rocks, like fans have been for so long. So finally the music is taking a turn. I don’t have anything against the artists who gave us the stereotype over the past three decades cause its where we(the fans passion) come from, but I’m just saying it nice to see this genre finally grow up.
